Management Team

The Management Team at SynCo has more than 60 years experience in biopharmaceutical process development and production.

Chairman - William J Rutter PhD – Dr. Rutter was instrumental in the founding of the company. A co-founder and former Chairman of Chiron Corporation, he currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors providing strategic scientific/business advice. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the National Academy of Science.

Dr. Rutter has served on the Board of Directors of Novartis AG, the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, and is Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California San Francisco

Some of Dr. Rutter's business awards and honors include: a special recognition award from the Biotechnology Hall of Fame for his lifelong contributions (1998), the Heinz Award for Technology and the Economy (1995), the Jacob Heskel Gabbay Award in Biotechnology & Medicine (1999), the Bower Award for Business Leadership from the Franklin Institute (2000), The Chemical Heritage Foundation Biotechnology Heritage Award (2003). He is also an Inductee of the Bay Area Business Hall of Fame (2004).

CEO - Pierre Warffemius MBA- Pierre joined SynCo in 2000 and is responsible for the overall activities within SynCo. Pierre has more than 18 years of successful financial management and restructuring experience, in the pharmaceutical and graphic arts industries to the company. Previously, Pierre held financial and project management positions with Chiron, Centocor and Kodak Polychrome Graphics. He received an MBA from the Business School Nederland, Buren, and holds a bachelors degree in Business Economics from the Higher Institute of Business and Economics, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Director Quality Affairs - Rob Sprenkels (Qualified Person) Rob joined SynCo in 2001 and is responsible for Quality Control and Quality Affairs within the SynCo organization. Rob has more than 17 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries, acquired in both production and QA/QC roles. Prior to joining SynCo he held positions including; Production Manager and Plant Manager at HAL, Project manager and QC Manager at Draka Polva/Solvay. Rob holds an MSc in Pharmacy and is a Qualified Person.

Director Manufacturing - Paul Ives PhD - Paul joined SynCo in 2004 and is responsible for process development, manufacturing and facilities management within the SynCo organization. Paul has more than 17 years of experience with biopharmaceutical production. Prior to joining SynCo he held numerous scientific and managerial positions within Gist-Brocades and later DSM. Paul has a BSc in Microbial Biotechnology and a PhD in microbial physiology from the University of Surrey, England. Paul is also a member of the Dutch Biotechnology Society.

Director Business Development – Richard van Rijnsoever.– Richard joined SynCo in 2005 and is responsible for Business Development within SynCo. Richard has more than 15 years of experience in the biotech industry. Prior to joining SynCo he held several business development positions within Crucell Holland B.V. and scientific positions within IntroGene. Richard has a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and an M.Sc. in Medical Biology from the Free University (VU) of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

 

Director Project Management – Sandra Verhaagh Ph.D.– Sandra joined SynCo in 2007 and is responsible for Project Management within SynCo. Sandra has more than 10 years of experience in the biotech industry. Prior to joining SynCo she held scientific and project management positions within Crucell Holland B.V. Sandra has a M.Sc. in Medical Biology from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
