Dr. Rutter was instrumental in the founding of SynCo Bio Partners B.V. He is co-founder and former Chairman of Chiron Corporation and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of SynCo providing strategic scientific/business advice.
Dr. Rutter also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the National Academy of Science and is Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California San Francisco. Furthermore, Dr. Rutter has served on the Board of Directors of Novartis AG and the Board of Overseers of Harvard University.
Some of Dr. Rutter's business awards and honors include: a special recognition award from the Biotechnology Hall of Fame for his lifelong contributions (1998), the Heinz Award for Technology and the Economy (1995), the Jacob Heskel Gabbay Award in Biotechnology & Medicine (1999), the Bower Award for Business Leadership from the Franklin Institute (2000), The Chemical Heritage Foundation Biotechnology Heritage Award (2003). He is also an Inductee of the Bay Area Business Hall of Fame (2004).
